Biographies
Dr. Babak Ayazifar emigrated from Iran as a teenager. Upon graduation from Notre Dame High School in Riverside, he pursued his undergraduate studies at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. He then moved to the Northeast for his graduate education at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Br. Babak has been a member of our ICCNC community since 2005, when his family moved from Massachusetts to the San Francisco Bay Area to join the faculty of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at UC Berkeley.
Since becoming a father of two girls, his passion for teaching has expanded beyond the confines of engineering and computer science, and into the realm of Islamic education for children. As part of a small team of Muslims—and in collaboration with the Imam of a local Islamic center—he has been working for the past several months to revise the elementary school Islamic curriculum.
Dr. Hassan Masoud teaches philosophy and logic at the University of Alberta, Canada. He has a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Alberta, Canada, with a focus on logic and theory of knowledge. He also has a MA in Logic from Tarbiat Modares University in Tehran, Iran, and a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Sharif University of Technology, Tehran, Iran.
Abstract of Dr. Hassan Masoud Lecture
در زمانه‌ی ما، که گفتمان علمی و دیدگاه‌های مدرن و پسامدرن با گفتمان دینی در می‌پیچند، و اهل ایمان چو بید بر سر ایمان خویش می‌لرزند، و عرصه را بر دینداری تنگ و تنگ‌تر می‌بینند، سخت نیازمند خوانش‌هایی نو از دین و دینداری هستیم تا هم از مواهب زندگی مدرن بهره بگیریم و هم از برکات زیست دینی باز نمانیم.
در این سخنرانی، خوانشی از دین پیشنهاد می‌شود که در آن، اولا، به جای باورهای دینی، بینش یا جهان‌نگری دینی محوریت می‌یابد؛ ثانیا، به جای احکام و تکالیف، التزام به فضیلت‌های معنوی اولویت می‌یابد؛ و ثالثا، به جای حفظ ظواهر، احوال روانی و شخصیتی موضوعیت پیدا می‌کند.
این خوانش، اگرچه با تفکّر امروزین تناسب دارد، و بسیاری از معضلات زیست دینی در دنیای امروز را حل می‌کند، و گره‌های کور دینداری در دوران مدرن و پسامدرن را می‌گشاید، همچنان ریشه در سنّت اسلامی و در تعالیم پیامبر اکرم (ص) دارد، و به هیچ وجه خروج از مسیر زیست اسلامی و امتناع پیروی از پیامبر بزرگوار را به مسلمانان پیشنهاد نمی‌کند.
