What can you do to stop Trump's war with Iran?

On January 2, 2020, Donald Trump ordered the assassination of Major General Qassim Suleimani. He did this unilaterally, without congressional authorization, with neither any apparent strategy nor concrete justifications. This assassination could lead the U.S. to a war on Iran and indeed we see many are stroking this destructive fire. We could see a series of Trump-caused escalations that could bring the U.S. to another immoral, senseless war in the Middle East.

We are concerned about the threat of war between the U.S. and Iran and the loss of thousands of innocent lives, another major refugee crisis in the region, and the destruction of UNESCO world heritage sites. Here are the steps that you can take immediately:

  1. The most effective step to take in preventing a war with Iran is to contact our representatives in Congress, and other elected officials, and ask them to put pressure on the President Trump to de-escalate the situation and to insist on the constitutional mandate of Congressional approval. We must call on all elected officials, especially Congress to openly speak out in opposition to the war on Iran, and demand that Congress immediately pass a resolution to stop a war on Iran. Congress needs to act fast to stop Trump’s march to war. Under the Constitution, it is Congress — not the executive branch — that decides when we go to war. Congress should immediately pass a resolution ordering Trump to halt hostilities against Iran. It should also repeal the open-ended 2002 war authorization, which Trump has used to justify military action against Iranian interests.

You can also contact your representative directly. Go to House.gov. Go to your representative web page. Click on contact. Either send them an email or contact them via phone.

  2. On Thursday, January 9, at 5 p.m. local time, the anti-war majority in this country will get visible to oppose Trump's war and say #NoWarWithIran. Nationwide anti-war protests are planned for this Thursday, please go to this link to see the demonstrations planned near you.

  3. Finally, we should all pray and ask God for peace and justice on earth, especially in the Middle East. We must recognize each other’s humanity and stand up against the dangerous rhetoric and escalations pushing for war on Iran.

O God, O our Master! You have eternal life and everlasting peace by Your essence and attributes. The everlasting peace is from you and it returns to you, O our Sustainer! Grant us the life of true peace and usher us into the abode of peace. O Glorious and Bounteous One! You are blessed and sublime.
