ICCNC Statement about Mahsa Amini and the Violent Crackdown of Protestors in Iran

Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilaihi Raji'un

"We surely belong to God and to Him we shall return." Quran 2:156

 As-Salamu Alaykum, Greetings of Peace,

ICCNC strongly condemns the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old woman in Tehran, Iran, while in police custody for wearing hijab in an "improper" way as determined by the morality police. Also, we condemn the unjust crackdown on demonstrations across Iran and call for an independent investigation into her death. May Almighty God bless the soul of Mahsa Amini and all those killed in the demonstrations, grant patience and strength to their families, and help the Iranian nation to cope with these senseless tragedies.

The Qur’an famously teaches, “There shall be no compulsion in religion” (2:256) (“La ikraha fid deen”).  Therefore, we call upon conscientious religious scholars and civic leaders in Iran and across the Islamic world to condemn women's systemic, and unjust treatment in Iran.

We ask the government of Iran to listen to the voices of the people and respect their views and their human rights.  We also ask protestors to conduct themselves peacefully.

Again, we pray to God to bless the soul of Mahsa Amini and all those killed in the recent demonstrations. Please recite Surah al-Fatehah for them.
