ICCNC Condemns Trump's Inflammatory Retweets
ICCNC: The Islamic Cultural Center of Northern California in the most unequivocal terms condemns the violent and unsubstantiated video posts retweeted by President Donald Trump yesterday.
These divisive and hateful messages contribute to distorted images of Islam and Muslims and stoke Islamophobia and anti-Muslim sentiment in the U.S. at a time when it is on the rise. Not only is this kind of hate speech incompatible with Islamic values, but also with the inclusive and democratic American values, and human decency.
Trump's shared posts from Jayda Fransen, the deputy leader of the racist and fascist Britain First organization, represent a serious escalation in provocative gestures and statements against 1.7 billion Muslims around the world. By retweeting these videos, Trump is doing nothing less than giving the Presidential Seal of Approval to anti-Muslim violence. He has made similarly disparaging comments about women, African Americans, Indigenous Americans, Mexicans, refugees, among many others, which should serve as a clarion call for renewed engagement and activism within these communities.
Trump’s steady stream of hate speech and harassment violates Twitter's terms of service, which clearly warns users: "You may not promote violence against, threaten, or harass other people on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, religious affiliation, age, disability, or serious disease." Despite a spike in anti-Muslim hate crimes across the US, Twitter has given Donald Trump a platform to incite inflammatory speech and actions against Muslims. Please sign the following petition to tell Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey to stop enabling Trump's hate speech by suspending or shutting down his Twitter account.
